[The voice that comes from this video is just as loud as the figure on the screen. He's smiling, though-- even if the jeans and leather vest are kind of weird and totally not his dig.]

So this is the communication system for this land, is it? [Alexander gives a low, approving rumble, as well as a nod.]

Well then. As much as I am displeased to be separated from my former companions, I see that the adventure here requires allies of a new sort.

I am Alexander the Great, and this creature-- [he lifts his Turtwig to the camera--] is the partner I was assigned. We will be taking on this gym badge challenge of which this 'mother' speaks. However, the first measure of business is to collect a team!

[He's still meandering about New Bark, so if you're there, feel free to approach him.]

Name: Aléxandros ho Mégas / Alexander the Great / Rider
Series: Fate/Zero
Timeline: Post End in Fate/Zero
Canon Resource Links: Canon; Historical

Personality:
The story of Aléxandros ho Mégas, better known as Alexander the Great, may sometimes seem like hyperbole, or even full on myth. But Alexander the Great was very real, and his personality is just as grand as his name suggests. In only 33 years of life, Alexander had created one of the largest empires in the world, spanning from the Himalayas to the Ionian sea, and was tutored by Aristotle himself. His settlements began the Hellenistic period, a span of Greek history between his death and the emergence of Ancient Rome.

Revered for his ability to band his army together, Alexander as a servant in Fate/Zero has a charisma status of A. This is above that of a king, which is rank B; it is the charisma needed not only to unite a kingdom, but an entire empire. The man was undefeated in battle and his loyal, experienced army is part of what guaranteed this. However, Alexander’s charisma carried not only to his people, but even to his most trusted steed (who is also a Heroic Spirit capable of being summoned in Fate/ canon). At ten years of age, Alexander tamed a horse that refused to be tamed by any other in the court, and his father Philip praised him, telling him that their kingdom of Macedon was too small for him and that Alexander must seek an empire befitting of his grand ambitions. Alexander named the horse Bucephalus, and until Alexander’s death, they were partners. Alexander had sensed fear in the horse and convinced him to trust him, and in Fate/Zero Alexander is shown to still carry this ability to see inside the hearts of others. He senses Waver’s fears and inspires the boy to dream, and accurately analyses the martyr-like rule of King Arthur. This characteristic of seeing into others and being able to inspire them is a trait on which his arc in Fate/Zero capitalises, showing that Alexander’s men will fight for him even to certain doom. His abilities even impress Gilgamesh, the King of Heroes, who before had seemed unimpressed with his other adversaries.

Though in Fate/Zero Alexander’s actions seem brash and ridiculous, the characterisation is not far from historical accounts of the great leader. As inspiring and grand as Alexander is, he is not without fault-- nor is he without immaturity. In Fate/Zero he butts heads with his summoner, Waver, over the use of trousers. This is not simply a comical addition but a reference; the king was purportedly known for his disdain for wearing pants. Alexander is also known to have sulked for days at a time when displeased. His life was also not without love and pain; though he married twice, he married once out of love. His marriage with that wife, Roxana, was stable, but Roxana miscarried children and the child that survived was born six months after Alexander’s death.

For his time, Alexander was known to have an impressive gathering of female friends, companions of a platonic nature completely separate from his rarely-used Persian-style harem. He was noted for not having forced himself upon Roxana while also being thoroughly infatuated with her, and formed very strong bonds with women, including Ada of Caria who adopted him as her son and the mother of the father of Alexander’s second wife.

In Fate/Zero he’s known for his affinity for video games and other such things. He is noble, overbearing both physically (standing at almost 7 feet) and in personality, and genuine. Though inconsiderate and wild, his greed benefited the happiness of those he conquered and it was his preference to win over his enemies by defeating them without killing them and controlling them without humiliating them. This behaviour extends even to battles outside of his own; when Kayneth’s order to Diarmuid would have dishonoured Diarmuid in his battle with Arturia, Alexander fights on the side of Arturia and helps to convince Kayneth to take back his command. Though he seems to at first use Arturia’s gender to dishonour her it is not his intention, and he admires her abilities as an individual; he even wished for her to become his ally. With Waver, though the boy’s inexperience and temper give him many shortcomings, Alexander is quick to bond with him and lead him on a personal level, securing Waver as a part of his kingdom as his retainer.

All in all, Alexander is larger than life in both behaviour and size. He tells Waver once, "Food, sex, sleep, and war! What ever you do, you must do it to the fullest. That is the secret of life." Alexander follows this philosophy to the T in everything he does, whether it be leading his army, formulating a plan of attack against the other summoned servants, or playing video games.

Like most of the servants in Fate/Zero, Alexander was a leader, but did not work alone. His greatest attack, known as a Noble Phantasm, actually summons his former warriors in a reality marble-- each of whom is individually a heroic spirit, but chooses to serve Alexander. This is one of the best examples of how Alexander works; he is constantly on the look out for allies in the interest of conquest, dividing the spoils of his greed. Though he fought at the front of his army always, he never doubts his warriors had a hell of a hand in his victories. He considers the strength of a king to be that of those who stand behind him, telling Arturia at some point that her belief that a king must stand alone is an idealistic, martyr-like folly. A tyrant though he may be, he knows the merit of a real reward. His intent was to wish to be human again should he have gained the grail; had he known the grail was corrupt, it can easily be assumed he would not recognise it as a treasure worth its toll and likely would have joined in the effort to destroy it. This is the kind of man Alexander is; he can discern the true value of a victory, the power of an ally or enemy, and the worth of a dream. He will follow through on everything, doing it to the fullest. He's reliable in that sense, and it likely explains why people are so quick to trust him.

He is a proud individual, but his pride is not easily damaged; he is confident. He has an ego, but it is without doubts. Even in being defeated by Gilgamesh he is not without victory; he gained a battle that "made [his] heart dance". It is adventure that truly inspires Alexander, and he believes he will always come out victor- but he is not foolhardy or deluded about it. He is strategic, learns from the defeats of his enemies, and though he puts forth a personality even Waver believes is foolish at first, Alexander is clever in most respects. Still, he won't always make the 'wisest' or safest of choices- not if the other choice is more fun or enjoyable. After all, the best and fullest way is not always the easiest and safest one; it is the one of grandeur and adventure, where a risk can be taken and conquered.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

+; “Pulling Arguments Out of His Ass”
An ability listed as one of Alexander’s “Talents”.

+; High Stats
Alexander has several stats listed as above average. These include:
  • Strength: B
  • Endurance: A
  • Luck: A+

+; Riding Ability
An ability that allows Alexander to excel with vehicles that require riding such as chariots, which are his favourite apart from his trusted horse Bucephalus.

+; Rank A Charisma
As explained in personality, Alexander has the charisma needed to rule an entire empire as a respected tyrant.

+; Rank B Military Tactics
Strategy and tactics are one of this king’s fortes. In battle he can direct an army like an expert.

+; Reads the Hearts of Others
Alexander an easily decipher a person’s character and intention. This doesn’t mean he will always act as though he does, nor will he always seem to care.

-; D rank Agility
Well, you wouldn’t be very agile if you were a nearly-seven-foot-tall brick wall of a man, either.

-; Bad Temper
As mentioned before, Alexander’s got a short fuse, and tends to deal with it a bit childishly...

-; Threats over Sense...?
Alexander’s men once were ordered to drop sand into a bay for six months to create a land bridge on which to invade Tyre before Alexander changed his mind and decided instead to craft ships with which he and his men conquered Tyre. Why wasn’t that their first decision...?

-; Inconsiderate
Despite being a good leader, Alexander is a bit wild and doesn’t always consider the feelings of others.

(context for both samples; Alexander’s starter will be turtwig, but in the samples he’ll be exploring a different pokémon companion. These are intended to be a week or so into his stay in Johto.)

[It is with a puzzled look that Alexander comes onto the video feed this morning, running a hand through his hair before giving a sigh.]

It goes without saying this is strange in my world-- however... I have a question for any who may be familiar with the births of these creatures.

[He turns the camera almost clumsily to the sight of a newborn ponyta. It sits on the grass, fondly waving its flaming tail about. What Alexander is more concerned about, however, are the remnants of the shell of its egg on the grass.]

Are all of these creatures born from eggs? Is that how this works?

[You can’t blame the man for thinking it’s strange.]

Moreover... how is it that the grass it touches has yet to catch fire?

Third Person Sample:
According to what he has read and what his companions have told him, a Ponyta can be a difficult pokémon to manage. The flames of their mane are dangerous, after all, and will only ever not burn the skin of a trainer it trusts.

Alexander has very few worries about this. He hardly even worried about being thrusted into this strange world in the first place; what was it but another adventure? Training the young firehorse is a task he hardly considers a chore; it seems more like reliving a fond memory.

For the first few days of the young horse’s life, Alexander does not bother putting it in its pokéball. He lets the ponyta run about his and his companions’ camp, and when it is tired, Alexander ties it to the post of their tent. On the fourth day he sits, legs crossed, and lets the ponyta approach him with the lure of food in his outstretched palm. When the ponyta eats, it is barely spooked by Alexander’s booming laughter.

Before the week is over, the ponyta responds to his every command though he has made no attempt to touch it, and Alexander is pleased. There is a familiar spirit in the heart of the strange beast, and Alexander calls it to his side. As the ponyta approaches, still gawky and awkward on its young legs, Alexander touches his hand to the pokémon’s head, watching the flames dance about his fingers.

“You remind me of an old friend,” he declares, grinning at his flaming partner. “Would you join me and fight for me, little one?”

When the ponyta replies with a content whinny, Alexander puts his hands proudly on his hips and grins even wider. “Then travel with me, beast, under the honourable name of Bucephalus!”
